Article summary

The Linear TV option enables building audiences based on Linear Programs exposure on Samsung TVs for up to the last 16 months to measure viewership for a series (complete or a certain season or episode) or movies.

Linear TV only contains shows or programs that are aired on Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) covered channels. The Program/Episode/Series names are provided by a 3rd party. If a specific program or show is not found in the search it implies that it is not covered by Samsung ACR.

  • Series: e.g., HBO Games of Thrones
  • Episode: e.g., Season 1, Episode 7, of Friends
  • Movie: e.g., It’s a Wonderful Life, Batman Forever, The Lego Movie, etc.

You will need to add Linear TV to an audience. If you have not created an audience yet, see Audiences for more information.

Add a New Audience Segment

  1. Click Linear TV in the left navigation panel.

Settings

  • Viewership threshold: The minimum amount of time a viewer should watch the content for the metrics to be considered.
Samsung DSP will identify and account for TVs that have consumed content per viewing session (i.e., the time the TV is on) and not over the total duration set by the Study Period. This drop-down list includes values ranging from 1 minute to 60 minutes.

  • Study Period: Samsung DSP enables you to build audiences based on a static study period, with pre-defined date ranges (7 days, 30 days, 90 days) or custom ranges. Enter the date range for the study period and click on Apply.

  • Rolling Window: The Rolling window enables the creation of audiences based on a continuously refreshed dataset with respect to the current date, e.g., last 7 days, last 30 days, etc. The rolling window period can be up to a year, defined either in days (1-365) or weeks (1-52), and requires an end date. For the end date, any day between the current date and up to a year ahead may be selected.

Advanced Settings

  • Time-Shifted Viewing: Time-Shifting allows viewers to watch live programs after their initial broadcast by automatically recording and storing them on a Digital Video Recorder(DVR) provided by their cable television service provider. Use this option to benefit from Samsung’s ACR Technology for differentiating viewers watching programs broadcast live from those relying on DVR. By default, the following three filtering values are added:
    • LIVE: This includes viewers who watched the program at the exact airing time and date it was broadcast on TV networks.
    • Plus +3: This includes viewers who watched the program within 1-3 days of the broadcast.
    • Plus +7: This includes viewers who watched the program within 3-7 days of the broadcast.

Some considerations to take into account:

  • The Time-Shifted Viewing filter is only available for the United States.
  • This filter cannot be applied to all networks. See Supported networks for Time-Shifting for more information about the supported networks.
  • Once added to the Segment Listing page, the selection you made regarding the Time-Shifted Viewing filters will be displayed.

  • Daypart: Daypart filtering refers to a general time of tune-in. You can select different day(s) in a week and specific timeframes in the day(s) for Daypart targeting. Essentially, you can build an audience of people who saw an episode on specific days of the week, but only during breakfast time, for example.
  • Timeframes: Timeframes can be used in conjunction with the Daypart option, in that you can combine all three advanced settings as needed. Days are separated into the following timeframes:
    • Late Night: Between 11:00pm – 2:00am
    • Overnight: Between 2:00am – 6:00am
    • Breakfast: Between 6:00am – 10:00am
    • Daytime: Between 10:00am – 5:00pm
    • National Prime Time: Between 5:00pm – 11:00pm

All three Advanced Settings (Time-Shifted Viewing, Daypart, and Timeframes) can be combined to work together as required.

  • Content Type: Select Movie, Series, Episodes, or Other.

    • The genre filter allows searching by a similar genre. There are approximately 250 fixed genres provided by the 3rd party collaborator.

To further filter search results, you can type an entry directly into the search field.

Keyword suggestions will be a deduplicated program title that matches the closest to the inputted keyword.

Things to consider:

Linear TV Quality and Coverage

  • All Linear TV metadata is provided to Samsung by a 3rd party. The metadata that appears in the Linear TV UI is associated with the ACR channels per country. Any programs/series/movies that do not air on these channels will not appear.

Program Title Duplicates and Data inconsistencies

  • Title duplicates are due to what is provided by a 3rd party. Duplicates are differentiated through the use of program IDs, descriptions, airing dates, and other attributes.

Original Air Date

  • The original Airing date column represents the first time the show aired on TV. If it is a series, this date represents the first time the series aired. If it is an episode, it will be the date when episode actually aired.

Data Scope

  • The Linear TV option covers Linear programs aired on major channels/networks covered by Samsung's ACR systems. All the programs that are viewed on these channels' schedules are expected to be available in Audience Builder to leverage for audience building according to their viewership. Any program that is planned to be aired in the future will be available 24 hours ahead of the broadcast.

Data Calculation

  • A list of Smart TVs is generated based on their exposure to the specified Series/Episode/Movie, viewership threshold within the selected study period, or rolling window. If a particular episode or season is not available in Audience Builder, it is most likely due to the metadata provider. If further investigation is required, please reach out to your Account Manager (i.e., Admin) to raise a support ticket.

Data Availability/delay

  • The Samsung ACR system captures exposure immediately after the linear program is aired but it takes up to 24 hours for this data to be processed into Audience Builder.
